MID stands for Measurement Instruments Directive.
This directive has been given by the European Union in 2004, but not applied until directive 2014/32/UE on the harmonisation of the laws of the member states relating to the making available on the market of measuring instruments.
From April 20,2016 this European directive came into force and after this date, all weighing systems produced or distributed in Europa, must have authorization for initial verification.
This directive seeks to harmonise many aspects of legal metrology across all member states of the EU: no market can function without correct measuring and without common units of measurement.
The EU’s legislation on legal metrology is one of the pillars of the single market for products.

MID covers different measuring instruments, including automatic weighing instruments.
A manufacturer must guarantee that all measuring instruments meet the legal requirements before they enter in the market.

The procedure follow the MID MI-006  and OIML R61 recommendations. Thanks to this procedure the manufacturer ensures and declares that the measuring instruments are in conformity with the type described in the EC type examination certificate. Annex D allows the manufacturer to perform the initial verifications of his measuring instruments at the production site or on location without the presence of a Notified Body.

The conformity assessment procedure is based on quality assurance of the production process, which means that the manufacturer’s quality system must be certified. The quality system includes the manufacturing and final product inspection and testing.
There is also a periodic verification, which is  necessary, required by the law and it needs to ensure the metrological stability of weighing systems.
For this purpose must be done the same test of initial verification.
The positive outcome of the periodic verification is attested by the affixing of a label sticker green bearing the date by which the instrument must be re-checked and any indication of the person who performed it .

An important point to emphasize is that the MID Directive cites the issue of supervision on the market: the specific verification and random control activities which is carried out after the introduction on the market.
